A KBSA member, are capable of producing over 600 Kitchens and Bedrooms every week and are widely recognised for the high quality of service. Over 400 employees operate from three quarters of a million square foot base, where the latest machine technology is married to some of the exacting skill of furniture manufacture.

Alwood - 75 Years of History

You could say the story of Alwood started with a kiss. It was the marriage of Wilson's aunt that brought Alfred Briggs senior from his furniture-making job in Burnley, north England, back to County Armagh.

Alfred made for his sister as a wedding present a bedside locker. After many admiring comments (about the locker, rather than the bride) a local company approached Alfred telling him they could sell as many of them as he could make. Alfred did not return to Burnley.

75 Years of Evolution

That was 1933. From these modest beginnings, Alfred progressed from making bedroom furniture to revolutionising the kitchen furniture industry in Ireland.

At the time, most kitchen units were made with metal; Alfred used wood.

'Are these made out of metal, then?' prospective buyers would ask, before banging the side. 'No', Alfred would reply, 'they're all wood.'

All wood. With that phrase - and Alfred's name - Alwood was born and became the first company to make a range of hand crafted free standing kitchen units in wood, a totally new concept in the austerity of post-war Ireland. That tradition of innovation still drives Alwood today.....
